Register a Purebred
Full membership is welcome from those who wish to help protect the purity of the Arabian horse in New Zealand through an annual commitment to membership, keeping flawless breeding records & registering foals bred
Applications for Registration will be subject to registration requirements as outlined in the
NZAHS Rules & Regulations effective at the time of application
One | Membership
Application for Registration of a Purebred Arabian can only be accepted from the Breeder (ie the owner/lessee of the Purebred Mare at the time of foaling) who MUST be a Full member of the NZAHS.
The Purebred Mare owner/lessee MUST be a Full member of the NZAHS at the time of service to a Purebred Stallion AND at the time the Purebred Foal is born.
The Purebred Stallion owner/lessee MUST be a Full member of the NZAHS at the time of service to a Purebred Mare AND the Stallion MUST be Stallion Nominated for that breeding season.
The annual Full membership fee is $126.50 plus new members pay an entrance fee of $23.00 on joining.
Two | Stallion Nomination
The purpose of the Annual Stallion Nomination system is to ensure that members don't inadvertently breed their Purebred Mare to a non-compliant Purebred Stallion and risk the resulting foal being ineligible for registration. If the Purebred Stallion you wish to use is NOT on the current season Stallion Nomination List please contact the Office.
All Purebred Stallions are required to be "Stallion Nominated" each breeding season in order to be used at "Public Stud" (ie to Mares not owned/leased by the Stallion owner/lessee) OR for "Private Use" (ie to Mares only owned/leased by the Stallion owner/lessee). This requirement also applies to Imported Semen from Overseas Purebred Stallions. There is no charge for Stallion Nomination.
It is compulsory for Purebred Stallions standing at "Public Stud" to have Genetic Test results for CA, LFS and SCID held on file by the NZAHS. This also applies to Overseas Purebred Stallions available at Public Stud in New Zealand via Imported Semen.
Refer to the "Stallion Nomination" page for further information.
Three | Annual Returns
Annual Mare & Stallion Returns are mandatory for all Full members. Annual Mare and Stallion Returns MUST be filed by 1st April each year for ALL Mares and Stallions (over 2 years of age) owned or leased by the Full member, even if they have not been bred during the season. There is no charge for Annual Returns.
Four | Application for Registration
A Purebred Application for Registration MUST be submitted by 1st July following the end of the breeding season in which the foal was born - ie Purebred Foals born during the 2019/2020 breeding season are due to be registered by 1st July 2020.
The Purebred Arabian Horse Registration & Identification Form MUST be completed in full and signed by the Breeder (ie the owner/lessee of the Dam at the time of foaling) AND the Stallion Service Certificate MUST be completed and signed by the owner/lessee of the Stallion at the time of service AND a Qualified Veterinarian MUST complete and sign the Identification Form to verify the foal's identity.
Purebred Arabian Foals MUST be Branded AND/OR Microchipped for identification for the purpose of registration.
A DNA sample must accompany all Purebred Applications for Registration.
Any Purebred Arabian accepted by the NZAHS Council for late registration MUST comply with the NZAHS Rules & Regulations in place at the time of registration.
Five | DNA
Purebred Mares and Purebred Stallions MUST be DNA typed prior to breeding.
Purebred Foals MUST be Parent Verified by DNA typing at Registration. A DNA sample must accompany the Application for Registration, in the case of Purebred Geldings, the hair sample is held in storage in case it is required at a later date.
All Purebred Arabian Foals produced using Imported Semen must be Parent Verified by DNA typing at Registration (including Geldings who shall be required to pay a DNA typing fee in addition to the Registration fee).
Collecting a DNA Sample:
Pull mane hair from the mid neck region.
Firmly grasp a tuft of 25-40 hairs as close to the skin as possible and pull evenly and directly away from the neck. The aim is to pull the hairs out by the roots rather than breaking off the hairs. When you look closely at the ends you will be able to see the small roots (especially with a magnifying glass). At least half of the hairs should have roots.
Avoid contaminating with hair from other horses. Collected hair should be immediately placed in a clean/unused and named envelope, sealed (avoid licking) and posted inside another envelope to the NZAHS Office.
