2007 June 2007 August
2007
January, 2007
Following are the principal points from the NZAHBS Council Meeting held
in Auckland on January 25th 2007. These are now published here, ahead of
the applicable Arabianz which in this case is the March 2007 edition.
National Shows - Drug Testing
In line with published advice (National Show Schedule) exhibitors/owners/riders/handlers
etc. are advised that ramdom drug testing may be carried out at the upcoming
National Show.
Receipts for NZAHBS Transactions
Forms used for various NZAHBS transactions will now carry a "tick
the box if you require a receipt" advice. If you require a receipt for
the cheque that you have sent to the office, please tick the box so that
this can be actioned. All monies received by the office are receipted however,
receipts have, in the past, only been sent out on an ad hoc basis.
Distinguished Service Awards
Council will select recipients of these special awards for service to the
Arabian and horse industry overall, which will be announced at the 2007 AGM.
Nominations should be forwarded to the Secretary, NZAHBS. They will be awarded
annually. The Distinguished Service Awards are not designed to replace the
Life Memberships.
Office Report
An assistant has been appointed to the Royal Easter Show office to help
Robin Hill with his work, including that of the NZAHBS. Kathy Gibson is receiving
a quick course on the operations of the NZAHBS and is expected to be well
up to speed within a very short time. She comes from an extensive equine
background and her appointment is expected to be of immense benefit to the
Society, particularly in the period leading up to, during and immediately
after the Easter Show and in the seasonal workloads at the office. Kathy
will also become a further contact point for members when phoning/faxing
and emailing the NZAHBS office.
DNA Fees - New Rate
Superb work by portfolio holder Gabrielle Deuss has seen a reduction in
DNA costs to members. DNA envelopes (one envelope/one purebred horse) now
cost $100 GST inclusive, which is a saving of $30.00. The new rate is effective
from 1.2.2007. An amended Scale of Fees will be forwarded to all members
and will be published on this website.
Suspended Horses
The following horses have been suspended until matters relating them have
been resolved:
Vigar Riffal (Jesmond Kamahl x Bushland Shaklan Amira) - grey stallion
NZAHBS 3097
Rabi Matar+AU (SK Shakla Khan+US x Shakista) - chestnut stallion NZAHBS
3008.
2007 WAHO Trophy Nominations
Nominations are now open for the 2007 awarding of this prestigious Trophy.
Nominees must meet the following criteria:
Written nominations only must be supported by a short summary qualifying
the nomination
The horse must be registered with the NZAHBS
The horse must be a purebred
The horse must be bred in New Zealand
The horse must be domiciled in New Zealand
The horse must be alive at the time of nomination
Nominees should be Arabian horses that have, in some way, been an excellent "ambassador" for
the breed, or in the case of older horses, achieved the same through immediate
progeny.
Nominations should be for all disciplines and not limited to halter horses.
Nominations for this Trophy will close with the Secretary on 31st March
2007 and the recipient will be announced at the 2007 AGM. Standard of Excellence
Booklet
This booklet, updated and published by the Australian Arabian Society,
is now available to members, on request, at no charge. Please contact the
Secretary. The Society will also make available, once supplies have arrived
from the Australian Society, copies of the AHSA publication, The Derivative
Horse.
Use of Stud Prefixes and Suffixes
This has become a bone of contention with some breeders who, whilst they
wished to protect their stud prefix, didn't necessarily want to register
their horses with that identity. Effective from 1.8.2007, the use of prefixes
and/or suffixes when registering horses will be optional. The Secretary will
maintain a record of existing and any new prefixes/suffixes applied for,
and if you wish to protect your "stud identity" registration is
recommended.

Tracey Rhodes has the AGM portfolio.
Exported/Imported Horses - Documents
The Society is aware that documents for some horses, in particular those
from the USA, are being sent direct to the importer/new owner. WAHO has requested
registries to, in the future, send all export documentation direct from registry
to registry. The horse owner may be provided with a copy of the original
WAHO Export Certificate. Failure of some registeries to follow this established
process has resulted in delays for registration etc. in the new country of
domicile.
WAHO Conference 2007
The rescheduled 2007 WAHO conference will be held in Damascus, Syria from
22 to 28th April. Robin Hill will not be attending this event, however, several
submissions from the NZAHBS will be forwarded to the WAHO Secretary for tabling
at the meeting. Gabrielle Deuss holds the WAHO portfolio.

have the information in the hands of the Secretary at least 14 days prior
to this date.
May, 2007
An NZAHBS Council Meeting was held in Auckland on May 4-5,
2007. The meeting was rescheduled over two days due to the travel plans of
some councillors falling foul to the fog conditions at Auckland Airport.
The key points from the meeting were as follows:
National Show - Drug Testing
This element has been a part of the schedule for several
years and was instigated for the first time at the 2007 event held at Cambridge
Lodge. The drug testing specialist deemed that no horses, in her opinion,
required testing on Day 1. She was not present on Day 2. No charges were
made for her attendance.
Roll of Merit
Recipients of the Roll of Merit certificates and Elite
Awards will now be required to be members of the NZAHBS. Non-members will
receive a letter acknowledging their achievement. Lee Cox holds the Roll
of Merit portfolio.

These were presented for the first time at the 2007 AGM
- the 2007 recipients being Barbara McGregor, Jan Wilson and Bev Jones. Congratulations
to the recipients. Criteria for the Distinguished Service Awards will be

Bushland Gai Sharee appears elsewhere in Arabianz. Congratulations to Lynda
and John Guy. Full qualifying criteria for the WAHO award is on the NZAHBS
website. Tracey Rhodes has the Trophies portfolio.
National Show 2008
This will be discussed at the July 2007 meeting. Points
to be included in the discussion paper include funding/sponsorship, criteria
for the selection of judges, venues, perpetual trophies. The 2008 event will
be held in Christchurch. The tentative date is 23 February 2008.
Following the 2007 event, Lee Cox (who jointly holds the
portfolio), conducted an initial National Show survey covering factors such
as venue options/trophies/prizes/schedule options and qualifiers. Input for
the survey is still welcome. Please email Lee direct - email: l.cox@xtra.co.nz.

An excellent paper was submitted by outgoing councillor
Gabrielle Deuss and this will be discussed at the July meeting.

(Volume 3 - AA280 - AA532), Section B (Volume 2 - SB2563-SB2594) and Section
C (Volume 2 - SC2547 - SC2672). Cost of the Derivative Register is $20 from
the Society Office.
Standard of Excellence (ex Australia)
These are now available free of charge from the Society
office.
Office Report
Backlog of work: DNA problems remain the principal reason
why registrations are not being processed through the office. An audit of
the office has found that over 30 members have registration holdups relating
to non DNA of dam or sire. Others problems include no mare or stallion returns,
incorrect brands on a horse with a stud prefix relating to another owner
and owner-non member. In future, the Secretary will return all incorrect
paperwork to the applicant with a letter stating which element is incorrect
and requesting the applicable paperwork be completed and returned to the
office for processing. Jan Wilson holds the Registration portfolio.
Receipts for Financial Transactions Through the Office:
Several members have indicated that they wished to receive a receipt for
their financial transactions through the office. Payments are receipted as
received and these will in future, be sent through to members.
RAS Conference 2007
The RAS Conference 2007 will be held at Paihia in June.
Robin Hill will represent the NZAHBS. The 2007 meeting agenda will include
a specific horse breeds meeting.
DNA envelopes
These must be prepaid ($100 including GST). Please allow
sufficient time between sending your cheque to the office and calling the
vet. The updated DNA list is published on the NZAHBS website. Imported horses
are placed on this list after Massey has issued a unique New Zealand DNA
number - hence their addition to the list may be delayed. This does not mean
that they cannot be bred.
Imports
Some of these have been processed and work is underway
to process the others. At the time of the audit - import documents for 33
horses had been received. Importers are reminded that documents must go between
the registry of the exporting country direct to the NZAHBS.
Suspended Horses
Rabi Matar+AU remains in suspension
Vigar Riffal remains in suspension.
Changes in the suspension status of these horses will be
advised.
Next Meeting

funding would apply to both North Island and South Island.
Showing Rules - 2006
To a query regarding "movement" as part of the

Registration Matters
Branding
Members are advised that effective
from August 2007, foals born after that date will not be required to be
branded. Foals that are to be registered as geldings, will be required
to supply a hair sample for storage at the NZAHBS office. Retrospective
registrations (i.e. Horses born before that date) will still be required
to be branded. For those members who do choose to brand, please have your
brand approved before having the brand manufactured. Member brands must
still be registered with the Society. Forms are downloadable from the NZAHBS/Arabianz
website.
Pulling of DNA hair sample and Vet ID of Purebred Registration
Forms
Effective from August 2007, members are advised that vets
will no longer be required to pull DNA hair samples or sign purebred registration
forms as a means of ID for the respective horse. A new registration form
that will take into account the above changes will be signed off at the August
4 meeting and will be available soon after that date. The new form has been
designed to cover registration of both purebred and derivative (including
Anglo) horses. The new registration form will be placed on the website, DNA
application forms are available now.
Jan Wilson holds the Registration portfolio.
Horses in Suspension
Vigar Riffall - all outstanding matters pertaining to this
horse have been cleared and the suspension has now been lifted.
Rabi Matar+AU this horse remains in suspension.
Derivative Roll of Merit
A Roll of Merit award system for Derivative horses was
discussed and will be looked at again once the new secretary has been appointed.
This remains work in progress.
NZAHBS Awards
In order to standardise the nominations and awards cycle
for the various awards that the NZAHBS makes each year, nominations for the
WAHO Trophy, Distinguished Service Awards and Life Memberships will close
on December 30 each year. Each category and the submitted applications will
then be discussed and finalised at the January meeting of Council in readiness
for announcing at the Annual General Meeting.
Office Report
Mare and Stallion Returns
Mare and stallion returns for the
2006/07 season are still being received. These are quite late, however,
some members didn't receive their paperwork in the December 2006 mailout,
hence the late receipt. Processing of the returns will begin during the
first week of July.
Imported Horses
A number of imported horses have been registered lately
and further horses are “in the pipeline”. Paperwork must be sent
from the registering society (i.e. Original country of registration) to the
NZAHBS. Please do not have the paperwork sent to you. Import fees still apply
for imported horses to be registered with the NZAHBS. The same fee applies
to both purebred and derivatives born overseas.
DNA List on the NZAHBS website
This was last updated in early June 2007. The next update
should include a number of imported horses. Imported horses that have been
DNA'd in their country of origin do not need to be re-DNA'd in this country
to effect registration and are placed on the NZAHBS DNA list once Massey
has issued a unique New Zealand number to their offshore DNA details.
AI Breeding Permits and those wishing to operate a Semen
Bank
AI breeding permits for both stallions and mares must be
applied for through the NZAHBS office before the collection/insemination
is done.
Similarly, those wishing to operate a semen bank for use
on their own horses or as agent for semen from a horse owned by a third party,
are advised that they must write to the Society advising the name of the
horses or horses for which semen has been stored, number of straws, they
must ensure that appropriate DNA is on file or applied for and if they are
acting as an agent, that they have the appropriate authority to sign stallion
returns. This matter is fully covered in the latest copy of the NZAHBS Rules
and Regulations and members are advised to read the relative section/s to
ensure they fully meet the Society's criteria.
Next Meeting
The next meeting of the NZAHBS Council will be held in
Christchurch on Wednesday, August 8.
Members wishing to have matters discussed at that meeting
should ensure their correspondence is in the hands of the Secretary at least
14 days from the date of that meeting.
The last meeting for 2007 will be held on Friday November
23.
August 8, 2007
Following are the updates from the NZAHBS Council meeting
held in Christchurch on August 8, 2007.

The following new members were accepted
at the August 8th meeting.
Full members
Lex Cowan Australia
Associate members
Jessica Magill Katikati
Rich Hill Partnership Hunterville
Michelle Zielazo Christchurch
Lesley Koch Inglewood

Imports
Purebred horses are required to
be DNA'd before they leave their country of origin.Countries will not DNA after
a horse has left it's shores. They do not have to be re-DNA'd on arrival in
New Zealand. Derivatives do not have to be DNA'd before export and do not have
to be DNA'd in New Zealand. Papers are sent direct from registry to registry.
If they are accidentally sent to an owner, please forward to the office. The
cost of registering an imported horse (purebred and derivative) in New Zealand
is $168.75 inclusive of GST. Jan Wilson holds the Registration Portfolio.
Exports
Council is aware that horses do leave New Zealand without
export documents. For the most part these are endurance horses which the new
owners do not wish to register in their country of destination. Export documents
are free of charge and are sent from registry to registry.

These were sent out with the last Arabianz and there has
been a good response. Thanks to those who responded. The lists covered purebred
horses only.

These are updated as additional horses are added into the
database with Massey. In some cases, imported horses can take a little longer
than their New Zealand counterparts. If you want to check the DNA status
of a horse that is not on the list please contact the office, Jan Wilson
(Registrations) or Jacquie Webby.

Rabi Matar+AU remains in suspension
For those contemplating using stallions
this season, please check to ensure that his DNA is in place and that he
is owned by a full member of the Society.

Registration
Jan Wilson is still coping with a series of problems
surrounding this portfolio, however a number of issues have been resolved.
Some of these are long standing. Please note that the complementary Bloodtype
to DNA offer has been out of time for several years. All purebred breeding
stock must be DNA'd. Jan Wilson holds the Registration portfolio.
Treasury Report
Accounts for Arabianz are being forwarded having been
generated by Jan. In future, billing will accompany the applicable issue of
the magazine. Jan Wilson holds the Treasurer's portfolio.
Endurance Report
Council discussed horses (both purebred and derivatives)
being entered under, in particular in endurance and CTR, different names than
their NZAHBS registered names. In some cases, stud owners have paid the required
fee to have stud name protection with the national body.
Council is sympathetic to the situation however is unable
to affect the outcome. Those affected are advised to write to the national
equestrian body.
Results for major rides will continue to be published in
the Arabianz. Belinda Simons holds the Endurance portfolio.

Roll of Merit /Website
Council debated both these above portfolios at length.
Lee Cox who holds both portfolios, said that some results are still late incoming
from secretaries after shows have been completed.
Council is also looking at a revamp of the NZAHBS website.
Lee has compiled a list of past (purebred) National Champions
and this has been placed on the website. A list of Derivative National Champions
is also being compiled.

2008 NZAHBS National Show
Planning for this event to be held in Christchurch 23rd/24th
February 2008 is well underway. The judge will be announced as soon as formal
confirmation is received at the office. The schedule, which includes several
new titles, should be available shortly. Day One will be halter events, Day
Two ridden events. The National Show portfolio is jointly held by several Council
members - Lee Cox, Jan Wilson, Tracey Rhodes and Jacquie Webby. John Morrissey
is chairman of the South Island National Show organising committee.
The North and South Island Championships
These will both be held the same weekend - 9th and 10th
February 2007. North Island hosted by Taranaki All Arab Club and the South
Island hosted by the Otago Club.
2008 Annual General Meeting
Taranaki will host the 2008 Annual General Meeting. The
AGM will be held over the weekend of 26th and 27th April - venue Quality
International Hotel New Plymouth. A stud tour will open the weekend on Saturday
26th followed by evening dinner and the AGM on Sunday 27th from 10am. More
information/booking sheets etc. will be sent out with the December 2007 Arabianz.
Awards
Nominations for NZAHBS Life Membership, the WAHO Trophy,
Long Service Awards and Young Achiever Awards are now open and will close
on December 30th, 2007.
The criteria for the WAHO Trophy appears on the NZAHBS
website. Applications must be in writing and should be forwarded to the office
for discussion at the first meeting of Council in the New Year. Long Service
Awards recognise those who have made a significant contribution to the NZAHBS
and New Zealand Arabian scene overall. Belinda Simons has the criteria.
The Young Achiever Award is a new award and will commemorate
the late Brian Ross. Applications are open to those who are under the age

documents including Council and Judges' contacts list, WAHO Trophy backgrounder,
importing Arabian horses, importing and using frozen semen, and various forms.
New Secretariat
Interviews with applicants for the above position will
be held in Auckland late in August. These will be conducted by Jan Wilson
and Jacquie Webby. Members will be advised of changes of offices, mailing
addresses, emails etc. as the changeover of Secretariat progresses.

The next meeting of Council will be held in November. Please
ensure you have any matters you wish raised for discussion in the hands of
the Secretary by the first week of that month.
