FACT SHEET

IMPORTING ARABIAN HORSES                  EXPORTING ARABIAN HORSES

Prior to importing an Arabian horse to New Zealand, ensure that all the correct paper work is completed in the country of origin. Once the horse has arrived in New Zealand, retrospective paperwork often cannot be done in the country of its birth to ensure registration in New Zealand can take place.

Procedure:

  • Before purchasing an Arabian horse (purebred or derivative) in a country other than New Zealand, please ensure you sight, either in print form or electronically via email/fax, that the horse is registered and that the owner shown on the registration certificate is the person you are buying from.
  • Confirm who is paying for the transfer of the horse from the registered owner to you.
  • Export documentation must be prepared by the exporting country’s Registry. Costs for these documents, in Australia, for example, vary according to what you are importing i.e. purebred stallions and mares $AU220.00, all geldings and derivatives $AU110.00. A full set of photographs of the horse, i.e. both sides, front, back, including legs and face showing lip area, are also required and these form part of the export documentation.
  • If you are purchasing, in particular, a young horse, ensure that your vendor has met the requirements to upgrade his/her registration from “Foal Recorded” to full registration.
  • If the horse you have purchased is an in-foal purebred mare bred to a purebred stallion, ensure that the Service documents have been sighted by you, and that these are in order to ensure that registration of the in-utereo foal can be made in New Zealand. Make sure that the stallion used in the service, if a purebred, has his DNA on file with the country of register.
  • The purebred horse that you purchase will require DNA typing to be done prior to leaving the country of origin. If it is a breeding mare or stallion, this may have already been carried out. Check and request a copy of the relevant paperwork. If not, this will need to be done. Current cost in Australia, for example, is $AU80.00. If DNA activation from Buffy Coats is required, if applicable, the fee is $AU30.00. Apply to the Australian Society for a DNA kit which can take a few days to be dispatched from their office.
  • Imported purebred horses do not have to be DNA’d again in New Zealand, but importers must meet NZ registration costs of $168.75 (including GST).
  • Derivatives do not have to be DNA’d at the country of export or on arrival in New Zealand.
  • Various companies exist for transporting horses to New Zealand by both sea and air. Check the yellow pages.

Registering Your Imported Horse with the NZAHBS:

  • The Registry of the Country of Export will forward all paperwork, once in order and complete, to the NZAHBS.
  • The Certificate of Export, for example, that comes from the Australian Society, is not the original registration certificate that you have sighted, but is a Certificate of Export which carries all relevant information.
  • The onus is on the importer to ensure that all paperwork is in order prior to the horse leaving its country of export and you are advised not to make travel arrangements until this is the case. Retrospective documents to meet foreign registration requirements are often not able to be completed once the horse has left its country of origin.
  • On arrival, the Secretary NZAHBS will advise that he has received all relevant paperwork and will forward a Import/Export Certificate (Identification Form) to you for completion. It is to be signed by the owner and a qualified veterinarian.
  • Once this form is complete, forward it back to the NZAHBS with the required fee, currently $168.75 (inclusive GST). Registration of the horse to the NZAHBS Stud Book will then be finalized and all import documents/certificates etc. will be returned to you with the NZAHBS Registration Certificate.
  • Application for registration for all purebred and derivative Arabian horses imported into New Zealand must be made within three (3) months of their arrival.

Imported in Utereo:

  • Before any purebred foal imported in utereo and born in New Zealand can be registered with the NZAHBS, the owner of the mare at the time of foaling must have obtained registration of the foal in his/her name, or have a correct lease document in place with the NZAHBS.
  • The person registering the foal applies for registration on the standard NZAHBS registration document accompanied by appropriate fees.
  • Documentation for registration must also include the service certificate from the offshore based stallion (either natural cover or by AI). The stallion must be registered with an approved Society and be DNA-typed.
  • To meet NZAHBS registration criteria, the in-utereo foal, if a purebred, must also be DNA-typed before registration can be effected.

EXPORTING ARABIAN HORSES:

  • Following the sale of the horse and before the animal leaves New Zealand, application must be made to the Society for the necessary documentation
  • The Society must be given, in writing, the name and address of the purchaser.
  • The Secretary NZAHBS will issue an Export form which must be signed by the transferring owner. This, together with a fully completed NZAHBS transfer form and appropriate fees, (transfer fees $33.75) and Export certificate fees (no charge) must accompany all paperwork to the office of the NZAHBS. The Secretary will then issue the following documents:
  • A copy of the Transfer certificate
  • Endorsed Registration Certificate
  • Extended Pedigree Chart.

If the exported horse is a purebred, it must be DNA’d prior to be exported with appropriate fees met.
