When are Membership Fees Due? Membership
reminders are usually posted in December with the annual Mare and
Stallion returns. They are payable by 1 January (for registration/nomination/voting
purposes) or 1 June for those with non-voting/non-purebred registration
requirements. Members still unfinancial as at 1 July in any year
are removed from the member’s
list. If you wish to rejoin the Society, a new entrance fee
will be payable.
What do I get for my Full Membership fee? Each full member
of the Society receives the services of a professional secretary to cover
all matters relating to horses owned by or intended to be owned by himself/herself.
As a financial full member, you are able to be nominated, nominate or second
a nominee for Council, vote in Council elections and have speaking rights
at an AGM. You also receive free of charge, four copies of the Expression
publication. If you stand a purebred stallion or own/lease purebred mares
for the intention of breeding from them, you must be a full member of the
NZAHBS.
Are there two levels of fees for those who do not wish to breed
a purebred foal? Yes, you can be an associate member for a reduced
annual cost and still receive the Expression magazine. See Fees,
Forms and Fact Sheets.

How do I register a horse? Registration
forms can be downloaded. Click on Fees, Forms and
Fact Sheets. A current
list of fees is located in that section and can be downloaded.
When I buy a horse, who should pay for the transfer
and should I sight the registration card? Paying to transfer a horse usually falls on the seller
and should be established between the two parties before final arrangements
are concluded. Ideally, you should sight the registration card to ensure
that the horse is in fact owned by the vendor and that the horse on the card
is the horse that you are buying.

What paperwork will I receive once the transfer
has been completed? You
will receive the Registration Card from the NZAHBS office which will
show your name as the new owner. Please ensure this card is stored
carefully. It is a valuable document.
Where can I learn about the characteristics and qualities of an Arabian
Horse?
The Australian Arabian Horse Society website (www.ahsa.asn.au )
has a downloadable version of “The Arabian Horse – Standard of
Excellence” which is used as a breed standard in New Zealand.
These books are also available from the NZAHBS office free of
charge.
Why do I have to complete annual Mare and Stallion
Returns? Information
on Mare and Stallion returns (of purebred Arabians) is required
to ensure foals can be registered. This information is loaded
onto the Society’s
computer and providing all information is correct, fees have
been paid and all other registration requirements have been
complied with, a Registration Certificate will be issued and
the horse will be recorded in the NZAHBS Stud Book. Mare and
Stallion Returns are not required for Partbred or Anglo Arab
Mares or Stallions.

Do I have to get the vet out to pull the hair sample for DNA and ID my horse?
From August 2007, you can pull the DNA hair sample yourself and vets are
no longer required to ID a horse, except if it is an import.
I want to register a purebred horse and require an
envelope for the hair sample. What do I do?
Download a form from the NZAHBS website under Fees, Forms and Fact
Sheets, fill in the details and attach a cheque for $100.00. Then send
it back to the NZAHBS. The Secretary will record your application and
send you a DNA envelope which should be returned with the sample, direct
to the NZAHBS office. DO NOT send it direct to Massey.
Do Derivative horses have to be DNA'd?
No.
Do purebred geldings have to be DNA'd?
No, but a sample of their hair should be sent to the NZAHBS office at the
time of registration so that it can be held on file.
Do purebred mares and stallions have to be DNA'd prior to be used for breeding?
Yes. Application forms for DNA envelopes can be downloaded under Fees,
Forms and Fact Sheets.

If a purebred horse is DNA'd and dies, does the horse's name come off the
DNA list?
No
Are imported horses added to the NZAHBS DNA list?
Yes. DNA information for purebred imports is sent from the exporting
country with their respective paperwork. The DNA information is sent
to Massey where the new import is issued an unique New Zealand DNA
number. It is then added to the NZAHBS DNA list.
How often is the list updated?
At least once a month

Do purebred stallions have to be owned by full and financial members to
be eligible for purebred foals sired by them to be registered?
Yes.
Do they have to be DNA'd?
Yes they do.
My purebred horse was bloodtyped. Does this information carry straight on
to DNA typing?
The special concession to allow bloodtyped horses to be DNA'd free of charge
has been out of time for a number of years. Horses that were on the original
bloodtyped list and did not take advantage of the free crossover to DNA,
will now have to be DNA'd at a cost of $100 per horse.
Do I have to brand my horse?
Effective from August 2007, branding is optional for both purebreds and
derivatives being registered with the NZAHBS and applies to horses born after
1 August 2007.
I want to brand my horse, how do I register my brand with the NZAHBS?
Brand and stud prefix forms are available from the website. Please submit
your brand design BEFORE having the brand made. It may have been used by
another stud.

I want to import/export a horse. What paperwork
do I require? Please check
with the Society. Import/export requirements information is to
be found on
Fees, Forms
and Fact Sheets. If your prospective import/export is a
purebred, it must be DNA’d prior to leaving it’s
country of origin. It cannot be done after export. Both purebreds
and derivatives require full sets of photographs and transfers
to be supplied to the exporting country prior to leaving the
country of origin.
What are the regulations regarding the importation
and use of chilled/fresh and frozen semen? Check downloadable
information for this topic on Fees,
Forms and Fact Sheets. Permits
for purebred stallions or mares being used in an A1 programme
must be applied for on an annual basis.

Is the Roll of Merit available to every horse? See details of the NZAHBS
Roll of Merit under. Fees,
Forms and Fact Sheets. Currently, it is available
only to purebred horses registered with the Society and specially engraved
certificates and/or Elite awards are presented only to horses owned by members
of the NZAHBS.
I want to become an Arabian Judge. How do I apply? The
NZAHBS holds Judge’s
clinics and exams from time to time. Please register your interest with the
Society and watch for announcements on the website and in “Arabianz”.
Prospective judges will be supplied with a recommended reading
list in relation to the Arabian horse.
I want to show my horse. Is there a special rules book that I can read?
The NZAHBS publishes a booklet entitled “Rule for Showing and Judging
Arabian Horses.” These are free of charge from the NZAHBS
office.
